The Labyrinth of Venice

This photo was taken on my second visit to Venice, on one of my wanders through the labyrinthine streets that make up the snaking city. Despite the tall nature of the buildings that occupy the island, and the narrow streets between them, the variety of architectural forms permits no struggle for the sun to burst into these passageways and illuminate the pathway ahead of you; these forms instead result in beautiful shadows playing on the stone beneath your feet. The subtle array of different coloured facades, and the dark shadow juxtaposed with the bold blue Italian sky called for me to take out my phone to document this scene. With its verticality in form and portrait orientation exaggerating the complex network of passages captured by the lens, it is a perfect fit for the labyrinth theme of this month’s issue.
